Private drum lessons

One-to-one private drum lessons take place at my home studio in Norwich. A relaxed but professional studio environment is a perfect location for banging beats and perfecting paradiddles.

Private tuition

The best way to improve your drum skills is expert tuition and plenty of time at the practice pad between sessions.

Teaching in schools

I currently teach drums at Sprowston Primary School. And I’m looking to extend contacts with other local schools.

Drum lesson FAQs

I offer drum lessons in 30 minute and 45 minute sessions. This includes warm-up and warm down, 1:1 instruction and plenty of focussed time improving technique, stamina and speed behind the kit.

All studio lessons take place at my home studio in Norwich which I have designed to be a relaxed and professional environment perfect for drum coaching. Lessons here can be taught in person or online and, if you live in Norwich or Sprowston and own a drum kit, I’m also happy to teach you in your own home.

Everything you need to participate in the lesson will be available at the studio. But if you have a particular pair of sticks you prefer by all means bring them along.

I have worked for the Voice Cloud project, providing creative singing and percussion workshops for disabled adults with learning difficulties. I can tailor lessons to suit the requirements of the student.

For specialised lessons that require wheelchair access, I can offer lessons from Earth Studio. All practice rooms at Earth Studios are fully accessible on the ground floor, however the bathroom is located upstairs. There is an accessible ground floor bathroom in the gym next door that the owners are happy for musicians with limited mobility to use.

Carl's home studio

I've recently created a dedicated space for drumming and drum lessons in my own house. It's an extra option for a teaching space and students are welcome to have lessons here.

Drum lessons for drummers of all abilities

For those who want to follow a formal programme, I teach from the Rock School and Drumsense Books. However, if the student requires lessons based more on the practical side of things rather than reading music this is also something I can cater for.

Lessons for novice drummers

For complete beginners, we’ll start with the basics: the first lesson will be learning how to hold the drumsticks correctly and learning how to play a basic rock beat with an introduction to drum notation.

As the student grows in confidence, I’ll explain more of the basic drum patterns and grooves to help them understand the basics more clearly by being able to read it as they play it, one bar at a time.

Lessons for advanced drummers

I say you never stop learning when it comes to playing the drums, and I have been playing for over 30 years! For experienced musicians, I will focus more on the improvisations of Jazz drumming and the musicality of percussion.

For drummers already out there playing in bands, the experience can have a lasting impact on the whole body. So we’ll work on tension reducing and core strengthening techniques that will keep you in the game.
